Description

The first video hosting and sharing platforms appeared nearly 20 years ago. Over these two decades, there have been many developments: some fifteen video-sharing services have emerged, several have disappeared and most have evolved considerably. On these platforms, content creators produce, distribute and monetise content for social networks (Cunningham and Craig 2019). Around them, a video creation industry on the Internet has gradually developed with many private or institutional players: television channels, participatory funding platforms, multi-channel networks (MCN), public institutions, etc.

This sector has been the subject of a growing body of literature, both internationally (notably Bishop, 2018; Burgess and Green, 2018; Cunningham and Craig 2019; Duffy et al., 2021; Glatt, 2023; Kim, 2012; Lange, 2008; Rieder et al., 2023) and in France (notably Assilaméhou-Kunz and Rebillard, 2023; Bullich, 2015; Coavoux and Roques, 2020; Heuguet, 2021; Louessard and Farchy, 2018). It has also led to the organisation of several research days, which we are following up on. The first one was organised by the Prim laboratory in Tours in 2017, then more recently in 2021 by Experice in Paris and at a pre-conference of the International Communication Association in Amsterdam in 2022.

These two research days will provide an opportunity to look at the various aspects of the online video creation economy. This leads to a number of points of reflection that will highlight the different situations and provide a better understanding of this rapidly evolving field:

  1. A historical approach to video creation on the Internet;
  2. The economic models for video creation on the Internet;
  3. The practices of video creators;
  4. The role of socio-technical systems: regulations, algorithms, etc. ;
  5. Intermediaries and other non-creative players in the industry;
  6. A comparative approach to different national and international contexts.

We welcome research on creators working on video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Instagram Reels, TikTok and others. The organising committee would like to point out that work in progress by young researchers is most welcome. Paper proposals may be submitted in English or French.
